Mini Model United Nations conference

8th February, 2024

On Tuesday 6th February, six of our senior pupils attended the Bryanston Mini Model United Nations conference at Bryanston School, where they joined pupils from 12 other schools across the South (including schools from London) to tackle a variety of issues faced by countries around the world. Allegra, Bea, Jemima, Amy, Ned and Hal were split into delegations of two, representing Guyana on three different decision bodies at the United Nations: the International Labour Organisation (ILO), UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and United Nations Security Council (UNSC).

Each delegation had to represent the views of their country as accurately as possible, with the quality of debate extremely high. They also had to get to grips with the key skills of research, active listening, negotiation, conflict resolution and technical writing. Consensus was also vitally important, as getting delegates from other countries to support proposed motions would ensure new international laws and regulations! A number of our delegates had their resolutions passed, including how to tackle modern-day slavery.

All six of our pupils had a fantastic time, representing the school brilliantly and leaving with a better understanding of global issues and how the UN works. To cap off a wonderfully exciting day, Ned and Hal (UN Children’s Fund- UNICEF) and Bea and Amy (The International Labour Organisation - ILO) were awarded ‘commendable achievement’ due to their work achieving consensus between all the countries on their committees. Very well done to you all and many thanks to Bryanston – and to Mr Capozzoli - for a super day of debate and discussion.
