    Gymnastics at Port Regis

    Boys gymnasticsIntroduction

Port Regis has a superb fully equipped gymnasium, consisting of all Men’s and Women’s Artistic apparatus, a slung pitted area and a sunken trampoline. We have a strong team of coaches, ranging in qualifications up to High Performance (HPC award). The gymnasts are assessed on their individual potential and are grouped accordingly. Their timetable and hours of training also vary and are based on the above criteria, so that each individual’s needs are realistic and achievable.

    Scholarships

Gym scholarships are available annually; the trials usually takes place in the first two weeks of February. Individual circumstances are considered if the deadline or scholarship date has been missed. Children between the ages of 7 – 11, with either County / Regional squad status or the potential to achieve this standard, are invited to apply. It is an advantage if they already train on full apparatus and have started work towards their NDP for Boys or Club Grades for Girls. Further details can be obtained from the School Office. If you wish to discuss specifically gymnastics, please contact Coral King, Director of Gymnastics – 01747 856396.

    Girls' Gymnastics at Port Regis

Currently we have 12 pupils who are on Gym scholarships at Port Regis. These children all have individual programmes, which range from 9 – 24 hours a week practice. Their age and potential dictate their hours of training. We have a mixture of boarders and day pupils, and the school works carefully to accommodate these childrens' needs. They all participate in an individual PE lesson a week with their coach, and the school timetable allows the gymnasts to train around the rest of their educational programme.

    School Squad

Girls' gymnasticsWe also offer training timetables for children who are talented and want to develop their gymnastics at Artistic level. The School squad children are members of our National Floor and Vault teams and train between 2 – 5 hours a week. The team gymnasts train at least once a week together in preparation for the IAPS / GISGA / BISGA and Regional BSGA qualifiers. Five gymnasts are required to compete in the National School Championships. Our teams include our gym scholars and then usually 3 or 4 school squad gymnasts. In the summer term, we spend time working on our display routines for school events such as Grandparents Day and End of Summer Term Prize Giving.

    Gymnastics PE

Gymnastics PE is run annually from October half term up to the Christmas break; the lessons are extremely advanced and the majority of our pupils leave school with a very good understanding of the sport. We also teach our Pre-Prep children weekly for a session of gymnastics and can offer extra training after school for any promising individuals.
