English as an Additional Language (EAL)
Children whose first language is not English are assessed when they arrive at Port Regis, using the Oxford Quick Placement Test. They are taught in small groups or on a one to one basis, by a specialist EAL teacher. The four skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening are covered, along with vocabulary building and grammatical structures.
Academic
Each child has an independent programme of study and is integrated into mainstream classes as soon as their level of English allows. Our aim is to enable all children to access the whole curriculum as far as possible alongside continuing EAL support.
Exams
Pupils intending to go to a British senior school may take Common Entrance.
Those who come to Port Regis for one year may take Cambridge examinations. These are KET (Key English Test), PET (Preliminary English Test) and FCE (First Certificate in English).
Pastoral
Overseas children are fully integrated into boarding life, live in a boarding house with children of their own age and join in a full programme of evening and weekend activities.
