SENCO/Head of the Educational Support Unit (ESU)
The SENCO/Head of ESU will:
- Ensure, in consultation with the Headmaster and the Academic Deputy, that extra tuition is enthusiastically and successfully taught to all children requiring learning support.
- Liaise as necessary with the Headmistress of the Pre-Prep and the EYFS Co-ordinator.
- Teach no fewer than 18 lessons per week.
- Make the normal contribution of a full-time member of staff as outlined in the Subject/Class Teacher Job Description in the School Handbook.
- Ensure that all children are screened regularly for learning difficulties and that assessments are administered to any children thought by any member of staff to have learning difficulties and liaise with parents regarding results of any assessments.
- Liaise with the Academic Deputy and Head of Assessment and other members of staff to review and develop appropriate assessment policies.
- Be responsible for the referring of children (after consultation with parents and tutors) to Educational Psychologists and other outside agencies.
- Implement as appropriate the recommendations of any specialist’s report on any child, liaising closely with tutors and the ESU staff to ensure support lessons fit as suitably as possible into each child’s weekly timetable.
- After liaison with tutors obtain parents’ written permission for special-needs lessons to take place.
- Supervise a review procedure to ensure children do not continue to receive support when it is no longer required.
- Co-ordinate all the special-needs teaching in the School, liaising closely with the Heads of Maths and French who organise extra lessons (non-special-needs) in those subjects.
- Ensure that the department is properly resourced. These resources are the responsibility of the Head of Department. It is his/her duty to ensure that all equipment is safe, secure and in working order.
- Be responsible for the departmental budget and for submitting annually to the Bursar a list of requirements for purchase in the forthcoming year.
- Be responsible for the Special Needs Teaching environment.
- Advise the Headmaster in good time of any changes in the department’s staffing requirements and assist him in the appointment of new ESU staff.
- Conduct regular formal or informal appraisal of ESU staff.
- Organise regular meetings of the ESU staff.
- Organise regular meetings of ESU staff, Head of English and Maths, other teachers of English and Maths, junior form teachers and the Co-ordinator of the Lower School. S/he should also liaise closely with the Academic Deputy.
- Ensure the provision of an IEP pupil-profile file on each child receiving special-needs teaching for distribution to all mainstream teachers.
- Ensure the publication and regular updating of a list of all children with special needs and, as appropriate, the support they are receiving.
- Liaise with the exam co-ordinator to ensure appropriate arrangements are in place for children with special needs.
- Ensure that all subject teachers are aware of the special needs of any child they teach and have access to any resources they may need in mainstream lessons. Occasionally observe mainstream classes to monitor support being given to ESU children by class teachers.
- Liaise with the Heads of English and Maths over initiatives to promote whole-school policies on literacy and numeracy.
- Attend all Heads of Department meetings.
- Attend Academic Management Team meetings when co-opted by the Academic Deputy.
- Be fully aware of the latest developments in special-needs teaching. S/he should attend courses regularly (at the School’s expense) and ensure that the ESU staff are similarly aware and trained.
- Liaise with the Academic Deputy over the provision of occasional INSET for all members of staff.
- Be responsible for the whole policy of the department. This should be reflected in a policy document which can be made available to parents, staff, governors and others. S/he will also be responsible to the Academic Deputy for the production and regular updating of the departmental development plan.
Additional Duties
The successful candidate will make a significant contribution to the wider life of this boarding school, including pastoral and possible boarding duties.
Remuneration
Port Regis has its own salary scale, which is above the state one.
