    Gap Year Vacancies

Looking for a rewarding way to spend your Gap Year before continuing with your studies? Perhaps a year at Port Regis may be the answer….

    THE GAP YEAR STUDENTS

Port Regis GAPsThe Common Room is augmented each year by five Male Gap Year students from the Southern Hemisphere, who join in January, as well as a Music Assistant, who is also likely to come from south of the Equator! In addition we have a French Assistant (for more information click here ) as well as a graduate Drama Assistant from the UK. The social life at school is enhanced by the presence of a similar number of Female Gap Years and a number of young Sports Hall staff.

The Gap Years are assigned to a Department where (he or she) has particular interests or strengths, such as IT, Technology, Art and Design, or Woodwork, and he/she assists during lesson time and may do some teaching. All Gaps help with games in the afternoons (including matches on Wednesdays and Saturdays) and with hobbies and prep supervision in the evenings. Most of these students tend to be male, but all are assigned to boarding houses which they visit on certain evenings, and sometimes provide overnight cover. The French, Music and Drama Assistants also help out with boarding duties, weekend activities and games wherever possible.

Apart from the boarding duties,  there are few, if any, commitments after 7.15pm, and the local pub/restaurant close to the school is a popular haunt of the Port Regis Gaps, Matrons and other members of staff. There is a full and varied weekend activity programme which is organised largely by the Gaps in conjunction with the member of staff who co-ordinates their timetables. There is, of course, free time during the week and at weekends, but the Gaps are expected to work hard and make a full commitment to the well-being and happiness of the children who think of the Gaps rather as older brothers and sisters.

The newly-refurbished accommodation, which provides single rooms for all the Student Assistants, is situated away from the children's rooms and includes a spacious and comfortable sitting room. The job is great fun and hugely rewarding. This could be the perfect way to spend your Gap Year.

    THE FEMALE GAP YEARS

Every year we also have a team of nine female Gaps. Usually all are from the Southern Hemisphere, who join us in January, and the social life at school is enhanced by the presence of a similar number of gap-year and graduate assistant teachers and a number of young Sports Hall staff.

GAP year matronEach Gap is assigned to a residential house. We have a senior boys' house, Prichard Hall, a senior girls' house, Grosvenor Hall, and three houses within the Mansion where the younger children sleep. Each house has Houseparents, and in the Mansion there is a Housemother and Assistant Housemother who have overall charge and care of the Female Gaps. All the Matrons assist with games each day and some can help with the junior forms if they wish. They also make an important contribution to the evening hobby programme and weekend activities.

The duties include all aspects of caring for the children: supervising washing, sorting clean clothes, mending, finding lost clothing and giving cuddles. There is a two-hour "off duty" slot each day and a full day, which includes two nights, off each week. There are also two weekends off a term. Matrons are expected to work hard and make a full commitment to the well-being and happiness of the children, who think of the Gaps as older sisters. All Gaps have their own rooms, which are extremely comfortable and well furbished.

All of these roles are great fun and hugely rewarding. This could be the perfect way to spend your Gap Year!
