Centenary Hall
The Centenary Hall, celebrating the original foundation of the School in London in the early 1880s rather than its refounding in Broadstairs, Kent, in 1921, is one of the first satellite buildings on the Park. Nestling comfortably in the landscape, it is a remarkably spacious and comfortable home for several classrooms, staff offices and music practice rooms as well as a fine 450-seat theatre and assembly hall.
Here we have our regular morning assemblies, some of the Sunday services, prizegivings and lectures. Here too the children perform their Music and Drama. Most of the music has moved to "Farrington", the new Music School, but major concerts still take place here, as the hall can accommodate large numbers and the acoustics are excellent.
Drama is an important part of the curriculum for all children. We have a full-time Director of Drama, with a full-time assistant and another member of staff who is a whizz on sound and light, and every child has a drama lesson every week whilst the several plays a year give plenty of opportunities for every child to perform on stage. With learning tending to become more introverted nowadays, especially with the advent of computers, it is really important that we continue to encourage the children to develop their outwardly expressive talents …. and what better way of doing this than through Drama?! It is also a wonderful means of helping us in our endeavour to make sure the children feel really good about themselves.
