HOW TO ANSWER A COMMON ENTRANCE QUESTION
Using a sample question based on The Nature of Man and The Fall (Adam and Eve to you and me!) this is how you should try to answer a CE question:
(a) What is stewardship? (2)
Question “a” is asking for a straightforward fact. You’ll either be right, or wrong! Look at the CE vocabulary list to help you.
(b) Describe what happened once the man was placed in the Garden of Eden. (6)
Question “b” is asking you to retell a chunk of the story. Don’t talk about anything that happened before… and don’t start talking about another story – stick to the point! Give as much detail as you can – try to quote from the story – that’ll impress the examiner!
(c) Explain what this account teaches about God. (6)
This question looks at the background and meaning of the story. Try to give three thoughts and support each one with evidence / an example eg: “I think it shows that God was kind, because he takes pity on Adam being lonely and makes him a companion”
(d) ‘Every single person should try to be a good steward.’ Do you agree? Give reasons to support your answer. (7)
This is the Moral Issues question. 'Do you agree?' means it could be a yes or no answer – you must give both sides of the argument as well as your own opinion. Try following this basic plan:
1. Introduction – define the key term "a steward is…."
2. Give one or two arguments for WITH EXAMPLES
3. Give one or two arguments against WITH EXAMPLES
4. Conclusion – what is your opinion? "I think that….."
