HOW TO ANSWER A COMMON ENTRANCE QUESTION

Using a sample question based on The Nature of Man and The Fall (Adam and Eve to you and me!) this is how you should try to answer a CE question:

(a) What is stewardship? (2)

Question “a” is asking for a straightforward fact. You’ll either be right, or wrong! Look at the CE vocabulary list to help you.

(b) Describe what happened once the man was placed in the Garden of Eden. (6)

Question “b” is asking you to retell a chunk of the story. Don’t talk about anything that happened before… and don’t start talking about another story – stick to the point! Give as much detail as you can – try to quote from the story – that’ll impress the examiner!

(c) Explain what this account teaches about God. (6)

This question looks at the background and meaning of the story.  Try to give three thoughts and support each one with evidence / an example  eg: “I think it shows that God was kind, because he takes pity on Adam being lonely and makes him a companion”

(d) ‘Every single person should try to be a good steward.’ Do you agree? Give reasons to support your answer. (7)

This is the Moral Issues question. 'Do you agree?' means it could be a yes or no answer – you must give both sides of the argument as well as your own opinion. Try following this basic plan:

1. Introduction – define the key term "a steward is…."

2. Give one or two arguments for WITH EXAMPLES

3. Give one or two arguments against WITH EXAMPLES

4. Conclusion – what is your opinion?  "I think that….."

REVISION NOTES

Use these notes to help you revise.

Once you're up to speed on the facts, try some

CE practice questions:

You will also need to read through the original texts from the Bible.

REVISION TIPS

  • Trying summarising the story/topic by putting it into bullet points.
  • Learn the ‘Key Ideas’.
  • Use mnemonics to help you (i.e. Large Snakes Eat Small Furry Animals stands of order of creation..)
  • Brainstorm what you know about a topic then use the information you have to fill in any gaps.
  • Do timed practice questions – then mark them yourself later and try to see what needs improving.
  • Plan your answer before you write it .
  • Do you KNOW the story?  Do you UNDERSTAND the story?  Can you APPLY the story to today’s world?
  • Think about the history and context of a Bible story.
  • Write out a vocabulary list for each religion and learn it.
  • Use colour/pictures!
