    Port Regis rugbyCommunication:
    Through promoting verbal and non-verbal communication skills when explaining what they intend to do, giving feedback to others, planning and organising group or team work and giving instructions and signals in a game.

    Numeracy skills:
    Through collecting and analysing data, using different forms of measurement such as calculating distance, measuring body weight and height, heart rate, temperatures and using equipment such as measuring tapes and stop watches.

    Working with others:
    Through taking on a variety of roles in groups and teams in cooperative activities, working in a group with a collective goal and deciding on strategies to meet it, cooperating with others by observing rules and conventions when competing against them.

    Improving skills:
    Through observation and response.

    Problem solving:
    Setting physical tasks/match strategies requiring input from pupils to improve the situation.

    ICT Skills:
    In accord with the school's cross-curricular approach to the teaching and development of ICT skills, PE plays an integral part. Pupils use digital video and digital still photography for performance analysis and technique improvement, heart rate monitors with computer print outs of graphs and are beginning to look at digital video editing as a longer term project.

    By the time pupils complete the A form (Year 8)

    • It is hoped that all pupils will have participated in a range of physical activities inspiring them to remain involved in sport through public school and beyond.
    • All pupils should recognize the importance of physical activities and general health and fitness
    • All pupils should have a balanced approach to competitive situations and display good sportsmanship.
    • All pupils should have had the opportunity to see how ICT can be used in PE.

    General Requirements For Physical Education

    Key Stages 1 - 4 (Age 4 - 14)
    Physical Education should involve pupils in the continuous process of planning, performing, and evaluating. This applies to all areas of activity. The greatest emphasis should be placed on the actual performance aspect of the subject. The following requirements apply to the teaching of physical education across all key stages.

    1. To promote physical activity and healthy lifestyles, pupils should be taught:

    • To be physically active;
    • To adopt the best possible posture and the appropriate use of the body;
    • To engage in activities that develop cardiovascular health, flexibility, muscular strength and endurance;
    • The increasing need for personal hygiene in relation to vigorous physical activity.

    2. To develop positive attitudes, pupils should be taught:

    • To observe the conventions of fair play, honest competition and good sporting behaviour as individual participants, team members and spectators
    • How to cope with success and limitations in performance;
    • To try hard to consolidate their performances;
    • To be mindful of others and the environment.

    3. To ensure safe practice, pupils should be taught:

    • To respond readily to instructions;
    • To recognise and follow relevant rules, laws, codes, etiquette and safety procedures for different activities or events, in practice and during competition;
    • About the safety risks of wearing inappropriate clothing, footwear and jewellery, and why particular clothing, footwear and protection are worn for different activities,
    • How to lift, carry, place and use equipment safely;
    • To warm up for, and recover from, exercise.
