    Lent Term  
    1-4 Cross-Country Run followed by Water Survival Skills
    5-9 Bench ball/Football (E&F) Tag Rugby/Cricket/Netball (C&D)
       
    Summer Term  
    1-10 Tennis/Athletics (dependent upon the weather - 5 weeks of each)

    F - C form (Years 3 - 6) PE Lessons (Weekly - 70 minutes in duration)

    Skills are progressive and developmental building upon previous year's work. Lessons differentiate between ability levels and challenge individuals at an appropriate level.

    Autumn Term

    Swimming:

    • Stroke improvement - all four strokes -taught in ability groups. Weak swimmers may have one-to-one attention and non-swimmers are encouraged to develop their skills beyond the duration of the swimming module. Again, this would be on a one-to-one basis.
    • Water confidence is a key element, relay races, retrieval of bricks, race starts, deep diving and pool games are also played.
    • During the autumn term we arrange inter-school galas.

    Hand-Eye Coordination:

    To teach basic catching & throwing skills and the development of basic spatial awareness in pairs, small groups and small-sided invasion games.

    Gymnastics:

    Flexibility & Strength testing, shapes, rolling & rocking. Trampoline / rebound - basic jumps & shapes Co-ordination - skipping, balls, balancing (beams & boxes etc.) Vault work - spring board contact & jumps, landings - plies. MISGA / GISGA / BISGA set floor routines - work elements from sequence, teach children to link agilities. Points - balancing on the floor using different shapes and gymnastic skills, balancing with partners. Rings & bar work - swinging hanging, rope climb, monkey crawl, upward circles etc. Trampolining - sit drop swivel hip work and introduction of front drops, knee-bouncing etc.

    Lent Term

    Cross-Country:

    Pupils run 4 or 5 cross-country races in forms. The same route is used, but we change direction, run with a partner and in teams to vary the challenges. Times are recorded and all pupils can run in the inter-house event in February.

    Water Personal Survival Skills:

    After completion of the cross-country run, pupils go into the pool and develop personal survival skills - safe water entry into unknown depth, treading water, swimming with pyjamas/layers on, buoyancy aid throwing, team challenges.

     

    (E&F)

    • Football skills - control, passing, heading, shooting; small sided games.
    • Benchball - passing, movement, scoring

    Girls (C&D)

    • Tag Rugby - to introduce the girls to running, passing, scoring and tagging - high paced invasion game
    • Indoor cricket- correct stance, grip, basic bowling and fielding techniques - leading on to indoor cricket

    Boys (C&D)

    • Netball - To introduce the boys to the basics of netball, developing passing and movement skills, progressing to the game situation.
    • Indoor Cricket - To play indoor cricket; review basic batting stance, throwing and stopping skills.

    Summer Term

    Athletics:

    Track and field athletics events appropriate to gender and ages.

    Tennis:

    Using tennis balls - movement and catching around the court. Getting into a sideways-on catching position. 1v1 catching games. Grip, stance and ready position and introduction of basic forehand and backhand grips and ground strokes. Serving and volleying. Match strategies for singles and doubles.
