A & B forms (Years 8 & 7) PE Lessons
(Alternate weeks - 70 minutes in duration)
Skills are progressive and developmental building upon previous year's work. Lessons differentiate between ability levels and challenge individuals at an appropriate level.
Autumn Term
Swimming:
- Further Stroke improvement - all four strokes - taught in ability groups. Water confidence remains a key element, relay races, retrieval of bricks, race starts, deep diving and pool games are also played.
- During the Autumn term we arrange inter-school galas.
Badminton:
To introduce and develop basic badminton skills; to introduce singles and doubles as appropriate.
Lent Term
Cross-Country:
Pupils run 2 or 3 cross-country races in forms. The same route is used, but we change direction, run with a partner and in teams to vary the challenges. Times are recorded and all pupils can run in the inter-house event in February.
Water-Polo
After completion of the cross-country run, pupils go into the pool and play water-polo. Pupils are introduced to the basic rules and develop passing, shooting and match skills.
Health-Related Fitness:
Children should understand the importance of preparing and recovering from physical activities and understand the benefits of regular exercise, and how different types of activity affect specific aspects of fitness. Pupils are introduced to fitness testing and perform and record a cardiovascular test - the bleep test. Pupils also perform flexibility testing and learn how to take both the carotid and radial pulse. Pupils also learn that heart rate can provide the basis for determining fitness. And learn to distinguish the difference between resting and maximal heart beats.
Summer Term
Athletics:
Track and field athletics events appropriate to gender and ages.
Tennis:
By this stage, most pupils are able to play - some play very well indeed! We review grip, stance and ready position and basic forehand and backhand grips and ground strokes, serving and volleying. Pupils are generally keen to play and enjoy.
