Welcome to the Physical Education Department!
Sport at Port Regis
Sport plays a very important part in all PR pupils' lives. Games takes place every afternoon of the week with regular fixtures on Wednesday and Saturday afternoons, and occasional fixtures on other days of the week. Most pupils in the Lower School get to play in at least one match every term, although this is not always possible. As pupils progress through the school we provide an even broader range of sporting activities for year 6, 7 and 8 pupils. Most of the older pupils also get to play in a match every term, and all pupils in the school take part in the fiercely competitive but tremendously fun inter-house sporting competitions. You only have to witness the house passion and general enthusiasm of the pupils on Sports Day every June to see how much pleasure and fun they derive from healthy sporting competition.
We are very proud of our sporting ethos and achievements; whether it be with our sporting elite who go on to regional, national and international successes, or our less able. Indeed, we gain just as much pleasure and satisfaction from preparing a 7th XI team for a match, or watching an Under 9 C team play a coaching game roared on by an appreciative crowd. Of course, we are keen for our teams to do well, but promote healthy competition and good sportsmanship with a clear sense of perspective. This blend of 'Sport for all' and promotion and pursuit of 'Excellence' has helped the PR Games and Physical Education programme establish itself as one of the most rounded, challenging and fulfilling in all preparatory schools. The combination of outstanding facilities, excellent balanced and varied curriculum and highly qualified staff ensures that pupils have every opportunity to develop and improve at their own levels. The weekly one-hour co-educational PE lesson allows us to focus on specific skills including: swimming, cross-country, water-polo, tag-rugby, netball, hand-eye coordination, gymnastics, tennis, badminton, cricket and athletics. Older pupils also explore the positive impact of exercise in Health Related Fitness lessons when we investigate heart rates, flexibility, general fitness levels and life-styles. Daily games sessions allow us to develop these skills further in ability groupings.
The PE and Games programmes are regularly reviewed and weekly departmental meetings allow us to discuss and keep on top of any issues. With some 800 fixtures per year, the administration involved is huge. However, the pupils benefit enormously from what Port Regis has to offer and the over-whelming feeling is that sport is 'cool' and 'fun' - even on a damp and muddy afternoon in February when the rain is lashing down - honest!
