FLUTE & RECORDER FIESTA for Port Regis Pupils

At 9 o'clock, the children were given three pieces of music and told that they had to produce a concert by 12 noon - absolutely no pressure! Ably and sympathetically directed by Mary Chelu, the thirty flute and recorder players of all ages, sizes and standards set to work with great purpose, interest and concentration. Gradually the ensembles pieces, one a particularly challenging arrangement of some ballet music by Tchaikovsky, began to take shape. We can't claim that the concert (a melange of solos, trios and full ensembles) was note perfect, but it was a highly creditable performance. Such a wide range of skills were employed, concentration and listening, co-ordination and team-work, rehearsal and performance and that is what made it such a rewarding, fulfilling and enjoyable experience. Well done to all those involved!

One of the most enjoyable concerts in the music calendar is the annual scholars' concert. This year was no exception as Clem (flute/recorder), Annie (soprano), Francesca (violin/piano), Lucy (clarinet/soprano), Holly (piano) and Hermione (soprano), performed music from Baroque times to present day, with great assurance and musicality. It would be invidious of me to single out any one performance or person. Their enthusiasm and interest shone through in their performances and they can be very proud of their achievements.

During the school year, the music department run a series of fiestas. These are workshops for different groups of instruments in which all pupils who learnt an instrument are involved. They spend the whole of a Saturday morning working together with the music staff in order to end with an informal concert. There are a great range of experience within the group, some having learned their instrument for some years and having passed a number of exams, while some may only have had a few lessons! With the use of our new recording facilities, we are able to record these and other concerts, which means that we can put excerpts here on the website which you will find below.
