Reading
Reading enables children to come to terms with and to understand experiences they have had. Reading takes pupils beyond personal experience and helps them to feel what it is like to be another personality in another situation and, in so doing, broadens and deepens their understanding of others. They sample the hopes, fears, pleasures and disappointments that await them in life. Reading helps them to develop emotionally, aesthetically and intellectually. Pupils develop critical powers, their own imaginations, and form values of their own, through discussion as well as reading.
Reading is a quest for meaning which involves fun, enjoyment, the desire for new information and critical evaluation. At Port Regis we encourage reading. Teachers themselves read and are good role models. We have a beautiful library of over 10,000 books that is always open - please see the Library website for more details. In addition there are class libraries, departmental libraries and house libraries. Boarding house routines often include a reading slot. We organise author visits, hold a Book Fair each term and distribute book leaflets so there is a real "buzz" about books!
Lower School Reading Week
There was great excitement when the Lower School held a Reading Week. A variety of adults – teachers, parents and helpers – read stories to children. Mme Pollard read from a French book, Mr James read from “The Jungle Book” and Mrs James chose her favourite “Tom’s Midnight Garden.” It was very rewarding and great fun. Thanks to Mrs Taylor for organising it, and to all the adults who took part.
