Extra Tuition
Following the recommendations of an Educational Psychologist, the results of an ESU assessment or concerns from a pupil’s teacher, tutor or parent extra tuition can be arranged within the ESU. The cost of these lessons is borne by parents. Two lessons per week is considered to be a sensible minimum although this will depend on recommendations and the child’s weekly timetable. They may be individual or in small groups.Â
Children will be screened on a selection of programmes chosen by the specialist teacher. The child will then follow an individual, multi-sensory, structured, cumulative individual programme at his/her own pace. Study skills and revision techniques are also introduced. Motor skills programmes and social communication skills programmes can be delivered.
There is also the opportunity for pupils to attend an early morning reading session to practise skills being monitored by their specialist teacher. Â Children can use the facilities within the ESU to help with revision and completion of mainstream assignments. The level of support will be regularly monitored and the results of ongoing standardised testing communicated to relevant subject teachers and tutors. Each child receives an Individual Extra-Support Profile (IEP) which is prepared by the specialist teacher and provides advice and strategies for mainstream staff. Full reports are written for all children at the end of each term.
Mathematics Provision in the ESU
Depending on their age and circumstances children may receive additional maths support from suitably qualified teachers within the ESU or as recommended by the Mathematics department. Pupils will normally have one or two half-hour lessons per week.
