F forms

Erratic toys
A basic introduction to the workshop. This project involves cutting and drilling whilst understanding how to change types of motion using a very simple mechanism. Pupils make a moving toy; it could be a car or a duck using eccentric wheels to produce a crazy motion!

Picture frame
A simple picture frame complete with a class photo: this introduces children to cutting, joining and finishing wood.

E forms

Hydraulic Crane
Structures enter this project as we make a crane using square section wood and operate it using hydraulics. An added feature is that this is a group project – everybody has a responsibility for the quality and accuracy of their friends’ parts!

Tickle Machine
This project extends the work on mechanisms, looking at inputs and outputs and helps pupils develop their understanding of how parts can be drawn to show how they can fit together.

Morse code sender
A useful introduction to communication technology that draws on history. A flashing light circuit is built and fitted into a simple acrylic holder. Shaping and polishing skills are used here to a high standard and a first look at soldering makes this an exciting challenge.

D forms

Solar fan

This project focuses on the importance of using energy and materials in a sustainable way. Pupils look at how we source our energy and future ways of using it efficiently. Focussing on Solar power we make a solar fan using vacuum forming technology.
